File Searching Module
This module provides the Gene Construction Kit® with sophisticated file searching capabilities. With this powerful tool, construct files created by the Gene Construction Kit can be searched for matches with key words in comments or sequences. File searching can simplify management of large numbers of constructs. By placing storage locations in the comments of constructs, inventories can be kept. For example, file searching could provide a list of all constructs in the freezer in room 318. It could also find all constructs containing promoters, enhancers, or all rabbit sequences. By searching for a sequence, all constructs containing a specific sequence could be found (e.g. all constructs containing TATAAA). Searching is straightforward. A directory (folder or disk) to be searched is chosen. Folders within the chosen directory (i.e. subdirectories) may also be searched. Search criteria are entered using the dialog box shown here.

In this particular search, all constructs in the directory (folder) Textco:GCK files:all vectors, and all folders within this folder will be searched for constructs containing both ampicillin and tetracycline but not kanamycin in comments fields. Up to 40 separate search criteria can be entered, each linked by boolean operators (and, or, and not). Searching is carried out in background. After completion of the search, all files with matches are displayed in a scrollable list, which can be saved for later printing. Files with matches or all matches can be opened for viewing.
